978-1-4197-3338-3 is the ISBN of *Avedon Advertising* (Abrams, 2019), a survey of Richard Avedon’s commercial photography. The image comes from one of its campaigns: [Calvin Klein](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Klein) Jeans with Brooke Shields, photographed and directed by Avedon in 1980. I keep only the legs in jeans and boots, kicked up, in black on grey. The title identifies the book; the painting isolates a fragment of an advertisement inside it.
