The liminal space occupied by Beware of Curator, draws inspiration from the ‘Beware of Dog’ signs, twisted with humour to a museum context. Once emblazoned outside houses, the ‘Beware of Dog’ signs symbolically present the canine as the guardian of the sanctity of the domicile. Just as dogs stand sentinel over private domains, the curator, in its contemporary understanding, has risen as the sentinel of cultural heritage and intellectual domains.
While protecting artefacts, curators might also inadvertently limit the interpretative freedoms of these very artefacts. Robert Smithson’s Cultural Confinement (Artforum, October 1972, vol. 11, n° 2) delves into the same query. When interpreted by diverse AI voices, the text is imbued with a plurality of perspectives, mirroring the multiplicity of interpretations that art invites but is often denied. It is as if these voices, though distinct, are all searching for a space of freedom, an escape from the ‘confinements’ of singular narratives.
