systems



arthurfouray.systems is both an archive of my work and a work I keep rearranging. Paintings, objects, music, books, exhibitions and unrealised projects share the same address. Duchamp’s La Boîte verte (1934) offers one point of departure: notes can extend a work without settling its meaning. I use the website as an archive, an interface and a book to navigate—a Gesamtkunstwerk, a total artwork whose parts keep their independence. A pillow gives a painting its dimensions; a sentence becomes a recording; an ISBN titles a painting. The connections matter as much as the differences. Making a process public means more than making it visible. I want its materials, sources and detours to be available without prescribing what anyone should make of them. Follow a date, an image, a title or a reference. There is no compulsory order. My logic is irregular.

rt4a began with a phone’s transcription of a nickname. The code became a signature for paintings, objects and recordings. A common name leaves room for different ways of working.

The artist book Screen comes from the 2015 Spectre exhibition research. A book, silkscreens on cushions and a video carry images between painting, print and cinema. Turning a page, moving through a room and watching a sequence become different ways of reading the same research.

Making exhibitions with and for other people is part of my practice. A programme, a room and the information around a work shape who encounters it and how. Exhibition Making brings research, selection and arrangement into collaborations at Silicon Malley, DOC! and LUMA Arles. The work includes making the conditions in which another person’s work can be seen.

a plus o minus is made with Nastassia Cougoulat Montel. We collect, photograph and arrange found, purchased and leftover objects. What draws us to a thing—and what changes when we put it beside another—becomes material for the work.

The project mmm (the inverse of www) moves from online notes to a book and photographs. Typefaces borrowed from artists and institutions let words arrive already dressed in someone else’s visual language.
