978-1419733383 is the ISBN of Avedon Advertising (Abrams, 2019), a survey of Richard Avedon’s commercial photography; in the series I began in January 2026, a book gives its ISBN as the title. The image comes from one of its campaigns: Calvin Klein Jeans with Brooke Shields, photographed and directed by Avedon in 1980. Of that picture I kept only a pair of legs in jeans and boots, kicked up, in black on grey. The number identifies a whole book; the painting takes one fragment of one advertisement inside it.
